AUGUST KEYNOTE SPEAKER LUNCH

Debra is an engineer by training, a marketer by profession, an entrepreneur with a successful exit from her own business, and in her retirement, a director, mentor and active angel investor.  Debra has been breaking down barriers since her university days, graduating as the first female metallurgical engineer from Wits University in South Africa, and then becoming the first woman engineer in SA to work in a production role on a working gold and uranium mine.Debra came to New Zealand in the mid 80s with two very young children, following her banker husband on what was a two year contract, but quickly became their new home.  Finding little opportunity in the almost non-existent NZ mining industry, Debra found a new career in market research, where she started her own company, Research Solutions, in 1992.  Research Solutions grew to be a significant player in the NZ research sector, winning many research excellence awards, and working for many of the biggest public and private sector organisations, here and in Australia.jIn 2007, Debra sold her company to Synovate, a global research giant, and a few years later, headed into her next adventure, on a mission to build a new career as a company director.  Along the way, she discovered angel investing, and her natural talent for mentoring entrepreneurs on their journey to build new and exciting businesses. Along the way, she’s invested in around 30 start-up ventures, and is currently on the board of three of them.  She’s on a mission to grow NZ Inc, creating options for the next generation to stay in New Zealand in high-value, world-class careers.Debra will talk about the barriers she faced and how she dealt with them, the things you need to know when starting your own business, and how building your network with collaboration and generosity of spirit pays dividends in the long run.

Joanna Wickham Photographer

I like to create pictures and tell stories and capture the connections between you and others. I don’t like being photographed.  And I know lots of people feel the same.  It’s not easy to act natural in front of the camera.  That’s why the photos I take aren’t about acting or posing.
